The Role Of Organic Fibers In Concrete

Due to its high compressive strength and low cost, concrete is the most used building material in the construction field. However, due to its large brittleness, easy cracking, low impact resistance and other shortcomings, it restricts its further development. The use of organic synthetic fibers to modify concrete can significantly improve or improve the crack resistance of concrete, reduce the generation and development of cracks, and improve the comprehensive performance of concrete as a whole.

1.1 Enhance the crack resistance of concrete

In the actual construction of concrete, due to the presence of excess moisture, a large amount of hydration heat is generated in the mixing process, plastic shrinkage cracks are easy to occur in the process of pouring and forming, dry cracks occur when losing water and drying, and temperature shrinkage cracks occur due to temperature changes in the hardening stage. The occurrence of such cracks has a great impact on the mechanical properties, impermeability and durability of concrete. Adding a small amount of organic fiber (generally 0.05%~1.0% of the volume of concrete) to concrete can significantly improve or improve the crack resistance of concrete. Because organic fiber is a low elastic modulus fiber, the fiber itself has good flexibility, and can be well distributed in concrete to form a three-dimensional chaotic support network, which can well prevent the occurrence of cracks in the concrete pouring molding process, and because the fiber has a certain adhesion to concrete, the fiber bears the tensile stress caused by the plastic deformation of the concrete, thereby preventing the growth and development of early cracks, and significantly improving or improving the crack resistance.

1.2 Enhance the impermeability of concrete

Concrete is a heterogeneous composite material, there are more micropores between the aggregates, with a large number of capillary effects, and cracks generated by concrete drying and hardening, which reduces the impermeability of concrete. Adding a small amount of organic fiber to the concrete can be well distributed evenly and has good adhesion to the concrete, which reduces or prevents the formation, growth and development of cracks in the concrete, especially greatly reducing the generation of connecting cracks and reducing the water seepage channel. At the same time, in the forming process of concrete, the incorporation of fibers increases its internal binding force, so that the concrete components are more compact after molding, effectively reducing the generation of micro-permeability. Therefore, the incorporation of organic fibers into concrete greatly improves its impermeability.
